Sisters Workshop

This is one of the workshops that I'm going to be taking at Sisters Quilters Affair in July in Oregon. The finished project is a 35 x 43 wall hanging. Coincidently the Challenge Quilt specifications for SCG this year is up to 36 x 48. The theme for this year's challenge quilt is any movie or movies. So I need some help trying to interpret this quilt as a movie. Do any of you have an idea how this design could represent a movie? The colors can be way different than the ones used in the sample.

WHile waiting for SNowball corner fabric...the back of M's is done!!!!

While waiting for the fabric to arrive that will be used for the corners of the snowball blocks, I cut out and finished all the binding for two quilts ( whicih is a candy cane use of all thefabrics) and the piano key border for G's quilt....these pictures show the backing for the M quilt which is just 10" square blocks of all the left over fabric sewn into one huge piece.

The Final Focus Fabric Arrives!!!!!

FIANLLLLLLYYYYY!!! The last two focus fabrics arrive...(borders and binding on their way!) These two fabrics were hard to find but I think they are just right. "Calvin" would approve!!!! The casino fabric is a discontiune so there are no pictures of the plain fabric online...the one here is a oprequilted with a complimentary fabric....the one on the left is the print we're using.

The final design and sizes....

This is the snowball surround fabric which will also be used in the border and the binding...a nice frame for the bright wild focus fabrics in the snowballs. Since this is a kind of memory or meaning quilt....each fabric was selected to have a special meaning for the receiver. This fabric seemed fun and had depth and texture without overwhelming the focus fabrics.....

this is the background fabric for the secret 70's bday quilt......the cornor's of the snowballs will be in this fabric and the 1 inch border and binding

this fabric was found by Hayley...she's so anxious to get sewin' again...she starts student teaching tomorrow and hopes to have found time in the afternoons....

Fabric cutting begins tomorrow but am waiting for two more to arrive..I can start cuttting so onward!

Here is the look with 5 x 7 blocks. The finished size would be about 57" X 75". That sounds plenty big to me. You would need 1/2 yard fabric to make the binding plus 2 yards for the solid black for the triangles and narrow border. Also I was thinking about the construction and particularly about cutting the border strips.

One way to create Piano Keys Border:

1: cut a strip 9.5" across the width of fabric
2: from each strip cut (3) 9.5" squares; that will leave strip 9.5" X 13.5" long
3: cut (3) strips from each 13.5", each 3" wide
4: strip piece all the 3" X 13.5" strips into sets for the border
5: cut each 13.5" strip set into 4.5" long pieces for the border and then piece them together

Here's the Snow Ball With Piano Keys border. I probably don't have all the fabrics, but you get the idea. What do you think of using the same dark color for all the corners. I think that that would give it some overall structure. Then I've shown it here with a small one inch border between the snowballs and the border. I can also try it without the narrow separator border. The piano keys are 2.5" wide finished; which would mean cutting 3" wide strips. The piano keys border is 5" wide, making the finished size of the quilt to be about 48" X 67".
